SPRINGVILLE -- One day after a small child died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound authorities confirmed that the child's father is a police officer.

According to Utah County prosecutor Tim Taylor, the 2-year-old Springville boy was killed sometime early Tuesday afternoon. Details initially were scarce, but by Wednesday morning Taylor confirmed that the boy's father is a Springville police officer and his mother is a part-time Springville city employee. Authorities have not released the identities of the victim or his parents.

Taylor explained that the boy appears to have shot himself with a handgun, though authorities still don't know where the gun came from or if it was related to the father's work as a cop.

"We know it's a handgun," Taylor said. "We don't know whether or not it was his duty weapon. We hope to have some clarification on that."

Investigators from Taylor's office are looking into the shooting, though by Wednesday authorities did not expect to file charges.

"We're treating this as an accidental shooting, but our investigation is moving forward as it does on all investigations," Taylor said.

The investigation was moving slowly in part because a number of investigators were at a conference on Wednesday. However, Taylor said that an autopsy would be performed and authorities should have more information later in the week.

In the meantime, Taylor went on to say, the family is struggling with the loss. He described both parents as "crushed" by the incident and added that investigators are trying to be sensitive to the family's needs.

"It's just a tragedy all around," Taylor said. "Quite honestly I think they're struggling, and rightly so."
