Box Elder SWAT member shoots self in ankle during training

MANTUA -- Box Elder Sheriff's Office is investigating how a SWAT member accidently shot himself in the ankle Friday.

The shooting happened at 1:14 p.m. near Dock Flats campground above Mantua, said Box Elder Chief Deputy Kevin Potter.

The officer was involved in a training exercise and was climbing a steep ravine with his AR15 slung over his back "when it somehow discharged," Potter said.

The other SWAT officers offered first-aid and transported him to Brigham City Hospital, where he is being treated for non-life threatening wounds, Potter said.

Potter said the SWAT team trains every two weeks and part of that training includes practising team movement in an open field and over rough terrain.
