NEPHI -- A West Haven man and former Marine who accidentally shot and killed his younger brother has been sentenced to six months in jail.
Fourth District Judge James Brady handed down the sentence Thursday to 27-year-old Eric Charlton.
Charlton will be back in court Jan. 15 to appeal his sentence. The judge said he will consider suspending all jail time if Charlton presents a detailed plan of how he can prevent similar crimes in his community.
Charlton lives in West Haven, Utah, near Ogden.
The fatal shooting occurred in May on a camping trip. A weapon Charlton was holding accidently discharged, killing his 17-year-old brother Cameron Charlton.
Eric Charlton says he still cries every day about the incident.
